Greetings!
I hope you and your students are finalizing your content and making edits to your amazing books! We are fast approaching the NEW DUE DATE of March 25^th.

As we get closer to the event, we have much to discuss and go over. PLEASE BE SURE TO READ OVER THIS WHOLE POST AND GET BACK TO ME WITH ANY QUESTION RIGHT AWAY!

1. New Book Due Date March 25^th by 5pm
Plans Book Checklist: The plans book checklist is provided in the Case Study. Please review this checklist before printing and mailing your plans book.

A. One copy of your printed plans book and a CD that includes an electronic copy of your plans book in a PDF format must be sent to Education Services at AAF headquarters:

C. Upload a digital copy of your plans book, reminder sheets and student conduct forms to One Hub (Download Instructions Here)
Please go through your OneHub plans book file and clear out any old versions of the book so there is no confusion for the National Committee.

2. Hotel & Rooms (need to be booked by 3/28) – If you do NOT plan to reserve any rooms, please let me know.

A. QUEEN BEDS EVOLUTION ROOM: We are out of Queen rooms, if you are a single person who has reserved a Queen, please call our hotel contact Laureen at 919.239.4784 to change your room to a KING BED EVOLUTION ROOM. This will be the same price and provide a Queen room to groups/students traveling together.
B. KING BED EVOLUTION ROOM: This is a single room with a King bed (the same price as a Queen and there are still several available.
C. KING EVOLUTION JR SUITE: This is room with a King Bed and a fold out couch (great for groups/students)

3. NSAC Student Participation Form is Due on April 1, 2013. No exceptions! Please be sure that your students fill this out in order to receive a certificate of participation. Due to the high volume of certificates printed, no reprints will be issued so please SPELL CHECK all information provided. (Reminder that April 5, 2013 - Presenter membership dues need to be paid to AAF.)

4. School Pride – the D3 NSAC Committee and the Hotel are working to make this the best experience for your students, please help by sending us your school:

NSAC Competition and D3 Spring Board Meeting in Raleigh April 19-20

The NSAC and Third District spring board meeting will be held in Raleigh this year. The NSAC Competition will be held on Friday April 19th. All club members are welcome to attend and cheer on the teams.

There will also be a D3 executive committee meeting at 2:30 on the 19th. The District Chair, Governor, Lt. Governor, Treasurer and the State Governors should plan to attend.

On Saturday, April 20th the spring board of directors meeting will be held from 9am-1pm. All District Officers, Committee Chairs, State Governors, Club Presidents, and Club VPs should plan to attend. Each club must have 2 voting members in attendance, including the President.

We will be meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn-Crossroads in Cary, NC (which is Raleigh adjacent). This lovely hotel is full of amenities and has great shopping and dining options. Rooms are $105 per night. This special rate is good until 3/28, and you can book through this link.

District Three ADDYs Entry Information

Now that you’ve made it through your club’s local ADDYS, here’s what to do next.

Your local club is responsible for forwarding all entries to the district. The cost to forward each professional entry is $85. All student entries are $25. Each local club is responsible for the fees of Gold winners. All clubs are REQUIRED to forward all their Gold ADDY winners on to the district competition. Silver winners can elect to forward their entry at their own cost.

District entries are due Tuesday, March 5. The address for mailing is:

All of your non-digital entries must also be sent to this mailing address, in addition to forwarding them through the software. Please be sure to include a printed manifest with your mailed entries, and please sequence the entries in the order they are listed on that manifest.

You will find basic instructions about how to advance your entries to the district competition using the new software under section 18 of the AAF Club Admin Judging Configuration handbook.

AAF of the Midlands and AAF District 3 Award Scholarships to Diversity Internship Program Recipient

Columbia, S.C.—The American Advertising Federation (AAF) of the Midlands selected Taliyah Wolff to complete the 2012 AAF of the Midlands Diversity Internship Program. Douglas Broadwater, AAF District 3 Diversity Chairman awarded her with a $500 scholarship at a ceremony at Eau Claire High School. Wolff was also awarded AAF District 3’s $1,000 Diversity Scholarship.

AAF District 3 Diversity Chairman Douglas Broadwater, who oversees the club’s Diversity Initiative in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, was quoted as saying “We are committed to getting minorities involved in the field of advertising by recruiting the next generation of talent at the high school level.”

Wolff is a graduating senior at Eau Claire High School and is heading to the Art Institute in Charleston, S.C. to pursue a major in digital media and video production. She spent time in a week-long internship intensive, spending time at various advertising and marketing departments at firms including Chernoff Newman, SCANA and the Colonial Life Arena, shadowing staff members in their day-to-day tasks and getting a glimpse of what it’s really like to work in the advertising industry.

Wolff was chosen from a pool of applicants after she wrote an essay on “why a career in advertising interested her”. AAF of the Midlands and AAF District 3 accept applications each year from minority applicants between tenth and twelfth grade for the Diversity Internship Program. For the AAF District 3 Diversity Scholarship, Wolff was chosen from a pool of applicants from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Applications for AAF of the Midlands’ 2013 Diversity Internship Program will be available at aafmidlands.com and through school guidance counselors beginning in November.

NC AAF Clubs to Meet with State Legislature

The combined AAF chapters of Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro/Winston Salem are participating in an event to engage with state legislators.

The event will kickoff 7 pm Monday, April 30th (with “unofficial” cocktails beginning at 6 pm) at with a dinner featuring Speaker, Mark Prak with Brooks Pierce, counsel to NC Association of Broadcasters. (If you’d like to attend, please call one of the numbers below for location information.)

Tuesday morning, Speaker of the House, Representative Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) will join everyone for breakfast at 8:45am in the 13th Floor Conference Room of the Wells Fargo Building.

After breakfast, the group will call on legislators from 9:30am – 1pm.

Deadline Drawing Near for Proposed SC Sales Tax Exemption Law

The deadline is drawing near for a watered down bill in the SC House Ways and Means Committee that would eliminate many of the state’s sales tax exemptions. A few of these that affect the advertising industry are postage for mail marketing, audio video masters, and mail advertising from chambers of commerce.

Maryland Bills Could Tax Some Advertising Services

Two bills have been introduced in the Maryland legislature that could potentially tax some advertising services.

HB 1051 would extend the states sales tax to include direct mail advertising services, commercial photography and art services, public relations and other business consulting services.

SB 152 is Governor Martin O’Malley’s proposed budget and includes a tax on products digitally downloaded. According to the governor’s staff, the intent of the proposal is to tax consumer products such as music, books, software and games delivered electronically. However, the language of the bill is written very broadly and could be interpreted to include business to business transactions such as work product digitally delivered by ad agencies to clients.

Representatives of AAF and AAF-Baltimore were in Annapolis on Feb. 14 to visit with lawmakers and explain how the bills could cost Maryland jobs by putting advertising agencies in the state at a competitive
disadvantage relative of out of state agencies.

Currently we are hearing reports of this possibly happening in South Carolina and there is a statute in North Carolina as well.

Groups Make Proposal to ICANN

AAF, many of its corporate members, local advertising federations and a
large group of other businesses and associations, have written a letter
to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
proposing a way forward as ICANN begins to accept applications for new
top level domains (TLDs). The letter proposes a potential solution that
will allow ICANN to move ahead with the creation of new TLDs while
affording protections for brand and copyright owners.

Under the proposal:all NGOs, IGOs and commercial stakeholders concerned about protecting
their brands should be given the opportunity to have those brands
registered, without cost, on a temporary “Do Not Sell” list to be
maintained by ICANN during the first application round (any interested
party which does not want to have its brands on the Do Not Sell list and
would rather apply for a TLD would be free to do so). We will assemble a
team from the interested constituencies to work with ICANN leadership
during the first application round. If this group achieves consensus
with respect to any proposals, those proposals will be voted on by the
Board. At the end of the first application round, should the parties
continue to disagree, all parties will be free to pursue their legal and
equitable rights without prejudice.

AAF believes this reasonable proposal affords a solution that will
protect the interests of all concerned. We hope to receive a positive
response from ICANN in the very near future.

Most Clubs in the 3rd District have signed on to this letter.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome a brand new American Advertising Federation chapter, right here in District 3.

Please welcome AAF Southwest Virginia!

Jeremy Bise is AAF SWVA’s founding president. Jeremy and Elana Todt ’s devotion to recruiting members and creating a program for more than a year has resulted in this new club now formally being registered with AAF as an affiliated chapter.

Several of AAF SWVA’s board members will join us in Charlotte for our spring business meeting and District 3 NSAC competition.

Their club will stage a March meeting around the Advertising Hall of Fame feed on March 27, and be visited by the AAF Roanoke president, AAF Virginia governor, and me on February 17.
